When a local Toledo manufacturing company called DMC Technology Group early one morning, the situation was urgent. Their entire network had been encrypted by ransomware, bringing operations to a complete halt.
DMC immediately mobilized its internal response team and engaged Arctic Wolf, a leading cybersecurity firm specializing in managed detection and response (MDR) and incident response services. Arctic Wolf led the incident response and forensic investigation, while DMC technicians worked directly with the customer to close the security gap, lock out the threat actors, and stabilize the environment.
While Arctic Wolf began forensic analysis, DMC focused on keeping the business running. The team quickly built a temporary virtual environment so the manufacturer could resume critical operations without disrupting the investigation.
Servers, data, and backups were securely transferred to Arctic Wolf’s forensics team. Shortly after, the attackers issued a $650,000 ransom demand.
Rather than negotiate with threat actors, DMC and Arctic Wolf executed a coordinated recovery plan.
DMC patched the firewall and affected servers, deployed endpoint detection and response (EDR) across all workstations, and confirmed the environment was secure. At the same time, Arctic Wolf used advanced forensic tools to recover data using shadow copies and reconstruct the environment.
For more than two weeks, DMC coordinated daily with Arctic Wolf and the customer—providing clear updates, managing next steps, and ensuring the recovery stayed on track.
Once all teams confirmed the data was fully restored and the attackers no longer had access, Arctic Wolf cut off all communication with the threat actors.
The manufacturer fully restored its systems without paying the ransom.
