Is It Time to Move Beyond SSL VPN?

For years, SSL VPNs have been the standard way for organizations to provide secure remote access. They’ve helped employees work from home, connect to office networks and access business applications from virtually anywhere. For many organizations, they've done exactly what they were designed to do.

The challenge is that today's cybersecurity landscape looks very different than it did when SSL VPNs first became widely adopted.

Cybercriminals have become increasingly successful at targeting VPN vulnerabilities and compromised credentials, prompting many organizations to reevaluate how remote access should be secured. We’re seeing more VPN breaches, flat network exposure and user friction — which is not only a security risk but a productivity drain.

This is why more businesses are beginning to explore a different approach: Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA). Let’s explore why.

Why Organizations Are Taking a Fresh Look

Many organizations assume that combining a firewall, multi-factor authentication (MFA) and an SSL VPN provides sufficient protection. While those technologies are important, they don't eliminate every risk. What’s the solution when something bad happens

Traditional VPNs were designed during a time when employees primarily worked in the office and remote access was the exception rather than the rule. Once a user successfully logs in, a VPN often provides broad access to the organization's network.

While firewalls and multi-factor authentication (MFA) add important layers of protection, a compromised account can still create opportunities for attackers to move beyond the specific information or applications a user actually needs.

Modern security strategies take a different approach so your organization can be exceptionally secure.

Instead of opening the door to the network, they verify a user's identity and grant access only to the specific applications and resources required to do their job. By limiting access, organizations can reduce risk while still giving employees the flexibility to work securely from anywhere.

The bottom line: Remote access should provide employees with the access they need — not to your entire network.

A Different Approach to Remote Access

Zero Trust Network Access takes a different approach. Instead of connecting users directly to the corporate network, ZTNA verifies identity and device posture before providing access to individual applications.

The goal is simple: reduce unnecessary exposure while making it easier to manage secure remote access. For many organizations, this creates a stronger overall security posture without making remote work significantly more complicated for employees.

Here's why:

  • Users access only the applications and resources they need to do their jobs.
  • Even if credentials are compromised, attackers have fewer opportunities to move through the network.
  • Employees can work securely from virtually anywhere without relying on a traditional SSL VPN.
  • IT teams gain a stronger, more manageable security posture that's better aligned with today's threat landscape.

Beyond Security: Insurance and Productivity

Moving away from SSL VPN isn't simply about adopting new technology. It's also about preparing for evolving business requirements.

Cybersecurity insurers are increasingly evaluating remote access methods as part of underwriting and claims reviews. In some cases, organizations using outdated remote access technologies may face additional scrutiny following a security incident.

At the same time, many businesses are discovering that migrating away from SSL VPN is less disruptive than they expected. With proper planning, organizations can often strengthen their security posture without significantly changing how employees work remotely.

With proper planning, implementation and user education, the transition can often be completed as a straightforward infrastructure improvement. All it takes is evaluating your current remote access strategy and developing a plan for a smooth transition.

Is It Time for a Remote Access Review?

Remote access has become a critical part of doing business. If your organization still relies on SSL VPN, now may be the right time to evaluate whether it continues to align with today's security expectations and your long-term IT strategy.

DMC can help you assess your current environment, identify potential risks and determine whether Zero Trust Network Access is the right fit for your organization. Let's start the conversation
